Why Do Americans Eat So Much Junk Food?

Why do Americans eat mostly junk food instead of a healthy meal?

We didn't change our eating habits overnight. Imagine what our ancestors would have said about a book titled "In Defense of Food." They would never have believed that food needed defense. Today one of the important indicators of the fix Americans are in is how swiftly Michael Pollan's manifesto sped to the very top of the best-seller list. The book cover tells us - Eat food. Not too much. Mostly Plants.

Coconut Water

"What other animal needs pro help in choosing what it should eat?" Pollan asks, recognizing the absurdity of the need for his own advice. Two distinct forces got us here. The first is "nutritionism," the idea fostered by science that food is nothing more than the sum of its nutrients. The second and more pernicious force is the billion food-marketing manufactures that turns food into "food-like substances."

Tips from his book: Avoid products made with ingredients you can't read or pronounce. Avoid products production health claims on the package. Yes, eat plants. But the best of them is: Don't eat whatever your great-grandmother wouldn't identify as food.

In a poll of Americans who were asked the top 5 reasons why people eat so much junk food:

73% said convenience

44% said it's what people like to eat

37% said it's because of heavy advertising

24% said it's more affordable

14% said it's because people don't know which foods are healthy

A lot of reasons we don't eat right is because of the food manufactures all the time finding ways to make more profit. They come up with fast dinners for families on the go. Convenience is what families have come to expect. We don't have time to for real cook healthy meals for our family. There's not adequate time after we get home from work, help kids with school work, do after school activities and maybe pick the house up a tiny to plan and cook a healthy meal. Sometimes it's junk or nothing. Tip: Slow Cooker meals.

We find time to shop for the exquisite clothes, get our hair done, get together with friends, brush our teeth, and stop to buy that coffee from Starbucks but we don't have time to eat healthy. What's wrong with this picture? Food is what makes our body able to self-heal but we don't have time to feed it the one thing it needs, real food.

Shopping for healthy food takes more time and costs more. The processed - boxed - quick meals will be on the town shelves of most grocery stores. This is done on purpose so it's easy to see - grab and go. finding for healthy choices means finding from the very top, down to very bottom shelf, skipping over center. healthy food costs more, at least at first. If you look at poor health resulting from eating junk food the price for healthy food is very cost effective. Tip: It isn't too hard to make a one skillet meal using whole grain pasta, fresh tomatoes spices and grass fed beef and it will taste better than the boxed Hamburger Helper.

Eating too much and too little:

It's not just about what we eat but also how much, too much or too tiny is unhealthy. So is when, how and why we eat the food we do. Most people think of eating too much and being overweight as being the biggest weight problem for Americans. Some people are so involved about the way they look so they starve themselves. Anorexia and bulimia are eating disorders in which the someone views himself/herself as fat. When they do eat it's something they like and not likely to be healthy. Eating too much can be from boredom, stress, uncontrollable cravings etc.

Junk fast food tastes better than healthy food. Kids are growing up eating junk food so they don't know what real food is. American's taste buds wouldn't know real food because it's so rare. If it isn't processed, loaded with sugar, salt, fat and will last longer than our kids because of the chemical preservatives, it has no flavor or doesn't taste right.

Junk food is all the time available. Look at the check out counters at any store, they are loaded with candy bars, bagged snacks and even energy gum! There are snack machines everywhere, even surface my son's dentist's office. What a determined sight when you leave the dentist; eat more candy and wash it down with this Coke. We are exposed to junk food everywhere. Shop are playing on our impulse shopping, besides it's just a candy bar, right?

This one is huge...We are bombarded with advertisements from McDonalds, Burger King and Arby's to name a few. This keeps food on our mind and after a while we think, hey that sounds good I'm going to make a McDonalds run for lunch. Our kids see commercials for fruit snacks, cereal, chips, candy, pop-tarts or Oreos and pick these things out when grocery shopping. We are being led to eat what is advertised, the whole purpose of the marketing.

Keys reasons Americans don't eat healthy:

Don't like the taste of healthy food

Can't afford it

Don't have time to cook

Bombardment of Junk Food advertising from Tv, radio, and online

Picky eaters

Don't know what is healthy

Processed - boxed - ready to cook - just add water - icy dinners are quick and convenient

Family meals are a thing of the past

Lack of knowledge about food:

Americans think they are healthy so don't put conception into what they eat. They think if they're still alive after all the time eating the food they eat today it can't be all that bad for them. For some, it takes a death of a loved one to make them think about nutrition. It's hard to wonder if better food could have stopped disease. Don't wait until you are faced with disease to think about our biggest self - healing tool, food..

If you still can't eat right I recommend the Pops, a whole food multi-vitamin to help get at least some good nutrition and stay alive longer.

Feeding the Old Horse

Owning an old horse can be at time upsetting when you see your old companion fading away. However, nowadays, horses can live happily until a very old age, some well after the age of 30. Hopefully this description will help you and your old mate find the right care.

According to Nrc and veterinary bodies, a horse is determined geriatric at the age of 20. In general, a horse is determined a senior horse from 15-16 years of age. In fact, many horse feed manufacturers supply specifically designed feed stuff for horses 16 and over. Whether it is true or not is debatable. Some horses seem to age earlier, others later. The horse will age differently depending on the lifestyle it had therefore it would be wrong to label all 16 year-old horses as old. However, from 20 onwards, a horse is surely labelled geriatric as its body and organs have started deteriorating significantly.

Coconut Water

As a guideline, when the horse reaches 15 or 16, one should pay extra concentration to its condition to ensure it stays wholesome and its weight stays consistent. From the age of 20, a body condition of 2-3 (Australian body condition scoring 0-5) should be maintained.

Feeding the Old Horse

Most tasteless problems encountered with senior horses

Feeding the old horse might come to be a challenge as assorted factors play an important role in feed absorption.

Teeth
The most tasteless issue is linked to teeth. As the horse ages, its teeth will wear off, some might fall off, some might come to be decayed and chewing of feed will be impaired causing improper absorption of feed and nutrients.

The usual signs for bad teeth are:

Slow to chew, inability to masticate properly Feed falls off the horse's mouth - the horse seems to be messy at feed time and kind of dribbling Whole food found in droppings such as grains and long stems Bad breath due to rotten teeth Thick nasal discharge, ordinarily on one side, may appear if a decayed tooth has been left untreated and has come to be infected Tendency to choke More prone to colics. According to an Auburn University study conducted in the mid 90s, impaction colics have a ratio of 88% in older horses in comparison to 29% in younger horses. Out of the 104 horses above 17 years of age, one of the main reasons was dental diseases (as well as poor grazing and tumours). while the same era, other study was conducted in Texas (Usa) over a duration of 12 months to identify dietary and supervision factors linked with colic in horses. The results identified that horses aged 10 years and over who are stabled and still get regular rehearsal are at higher risks than those pastured at all times. Among other factors are recent changes in diet, in type of hay, in weather conditions, in housing and worm infestation. Further studies confirmed similar results in 2000/2001, where 364 horses were examined over a duration of 12 months in Texas Usa. In summary, changes in diet (type of hay, grain or concentrate) as well as feeding more than 2.7kg of grains, feeding round bales of hay, and decreased access to pasture lead to high risk of colic.

Worms
As seen above, worm infestation is a customary issue. This also applies to all horses, young and old. If the horse is ridden with parasites, its feed absorption will be lessen. One should supervene a worming regime of 6 to 8 weeks.

A horse infested with parasites is more at risk to have colics and difficulties in putting on weight. If the horse has received a consistent worming programme all its life, it is less likely to have colics and more likely to have a long and wholesome life.

Poor digestion
As the horse ages, its digestive theory seem to come to be less sufficient at breaking down food as the horse may have reduced salivation and oesophagus functions. Although calcium absorption does not seem to be drastically affected, fibre and phosphorus digestion reduces with age. The later being even more pronounced in horses with tumours.

When the horse is depleted of important nutrients, its immune theory ability to fight illnesses will also be decreased, exposing it to high risks of not only becoming ill, but also not being able to recover easily.

The horse is then prone to lose body condition and weight.

Arthritis
Arthritic conditions are painful and may restrict the horse in walking and grazing.

Other illnesses
Horses who advanced pituitary and thyroid tumours may have reduced insulin response and come to be sugar and starch intolerant. Same applies to founders which is often linked to pituitary tumours.

Horse with renal and liver diseases also want extra diet. In case of renal problems, beep pulp and lucerne hay should be avoided due to their high content of calcium. In case of liver and hepatic diseases, high protein and high fat diets should be avoided.

How to care for the senior horse

It is important that the old horse be comfortable and enjoy its retirement.

Its teeth should be checked every 6 months and full vet check-up should be done every 6 to 12 months. A full blood test is not high-priced and will help you understand how to care for your old companion. It will show many abnormalities and your veterinarian will be able to help you find standard treatment.

In case of arthritis, apart from medication to make the horse more comfortable, many natural therapies may help as well. Acupuncture, homeopathy, shiatsu, acupressure, aromatherapy and clay therapy are some. The herb Devil's Claw can work as a natural anti-inflammatory instead of giving phenybutazone (Bute) but should not be given if stomach ulcers are present, in case of diabetes and cardiac disorders. French green clay applied as a poultice to sore area may supply great relief.

Old horses quite often get bullied by the youngsters at feed time. One should ensure that the senior horse is able to eat in peace and all its meals.

For best digestion, feed small quantities 2 or even 3 times a day.

A good shelter is necessary to the old horse as it is more sensitive to weather changes.

In cool weather, if the horse accepts it, a rug will keep him warm and will help save his energy.

Always supply clean fresh water at all time.

Vitamin C may help the horse's immune system. Vitamin C can be found naturally in Rosehip. 1 to 2 tablespoons a day in the feed.

Vitamin B group in the form of Brewer's Yeast might be beneficial, especially in cases of renal and hepatic diseases. It will help with digestion as well. Up to 100 g/day.

Sweet feed should be avoided, especially in founders and sugar intolerant horses. This includes molasses, honey and sweeten feed mixes.

If there is no liver dysfunction, the expanding of vegetable oil may help keep its body condition. Up to 2 cups a day, introduced gradually over a 3 week-period. Virgin coconut oil is a rich source of lauric acid, the source of disease fighting fatty acid derivative monolaurin. Cold pressed Canola oil is also an exquisite oil for horses. It contains around 10% omega 3 fatty acids, 20% omega 6 fatty acids and omega 9 fatty acids. Omega-3 and 6 are necessary to the normal functioning of all tissues and for vision, heart, rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory diseases. These two fatty acids need to be balanced and the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 should be about 2:1, which is in case, granted by cold-pressed Canola oil. Coconut oil can be given in smaller quantity than Canola such as 25-100ml. Canola can complement to reach 2 cups of oil a day. When providing fat and high protein diets to a horse, one must monitor the horse's dropping to see if their consistency stays normal. If the droppings come to be too lose like "cow pat", sell out the oil and/or the protein content. Too much protein can be seen in urine as it becomes thick, smelly and difficult to pass.

Avoid starch food for best digestion, especially if the horse has a tendency to tie-up or founders.

Because the digestion is not optimal at this age, avoid feeding grains. Extruded grains are much safer and have shown good results with geriatric horses. Feed manufacturers supply extruded/micronized grains as well as especially designed feed stuff for senior horses.

Herbs that may help with gut ulceration are Marshmallow, Meadowsweet, Liquorice and slippery Elm Bark. A handful each of Marshmallow and Meadowsweet once a day may help with gut ulceration, inflammation and irritation. Liquorice has to be used with caution as it is a laxative and should not be used if the horse is scouring or have loose manure. It should not be used long term Whether and only 1 teaspoon a day for up to 3 months. slippery Elm Bark is good for scouring at a dose of 1 to 2 tablespoons a day.

You may supply good ability protein (12-16%, 8-10% if renal diseases are present) in the form of full fat soy meal or stabilized copra meal. Copra meal like CoolStance supply 20% crude protein whilst a full fat soy meal like Soygize (HyFeed) contains 39% protein, so only a small quantity might be needed. If no liver and renal diseases, good lucerne chaff may be added in small quantity for protein.

Because the horse might have poor teeth, supply its meals as a soft mash for easier chewing as well as good ability chaff. Hay might be too hard to chew or the horse might choke on it, so the hay might need to be dampen to soften it, or chopped like chaff. It is good institution to dampen hay so it is not dusty. To do so, John Kohnke recommends to put the hay in an hessian bag and let it soak in water for up to 1 hour. Remove the bag and let it hang to drain water.

Always supply hay at ground level. If hay is in hay nets that are suspended too high, there is higher risk of choke. A horse, by nature, grazes with its head down and its digestive theory is adapted to this practice. Having to eat with its head up goes against its physiology and causes problems.

As we are on the episode of dust, rations should always be dampen to eliminate dust. Dust is very damaging to a horse's lungs. Stabled horses should also have a dust free environment.

And of course, always seek veterinary advice, even if it seems to be nothing! best be sure than sorry

Vita Coco Coconut Water Variety Pack, 17-Ounce Packages (Pack of 12) Overview

One evening in a Manhattan bar in February 2002, childhood friends, Ira Liran and Michael Kirban, were speaking with a couple of girls they had just met from Brazil. When asked what they missed most about their country, one of the girls, without hesitation, answered "agua de coco." Coconut water, she explained, is the most nutritious and delicious drink in the world. Two months later, Liran traveled to Brazil and started researching the prospect of branding coconut water for the American market. He realized the girl's enthusiasm for the beverage was not exaggerated—Brazilians just can't get enough coconut water. After spending several months working with coconut plantations and producers, making connections, and learning the politics of production in Brazil, Vita Coco was born. Meanwhile, Kirban started the initial market research in New York. Meeting with distributors and beverage insiders, he quickly realized the tremendous consumer interest in "functional beverages." He spoke with several distributors who then introduced Kirban to some of their key accounts. The response was fantastic. Three years later in 2005, the two successfully brought Vita Coco to market in a handful of stores along the East Coast. Now, six years after that fateful night in Soho, Vita Coco has not only carved a market in the non-carbonated beverage business, but is also redefining the alternative sports beverage category.

Coconut water is the clear liquid you find when you open a young coconut. It's plainly sweet, yet low in fat and it's fat and cholesterol free. For this reason, it makes an perfect sports drink. It's the ideal compromise between citizen who find plain water too boring but who don't want to load up on sugar and empty fat that are found in market sports drinks.

Coconut Milk

Coconut milk is the thicker, creamier white liquid that's prepared from meat of the coconut. In other words, you can't crack open a coconut and get coconut milk - you only get coconut water this way. Coconut milk has to be made.

Coconut milk is sweeter and richer than coconut water, production it a good substitute for quarterly milk or soy milk. While coconut milk is determined by many to be very healthy, these claims are sometimes disputed because it's high in saturated fat (the same is true for coconut oil, as we'll shortly see). However, many nutritionists are rethinking the whole "saturated fats are bad" philosophy.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is enjoying a real renaissance in the condition food community, probably even more so than coconut water or milk. Suddenly, we're hearing that this oil, though high in saturated fat, is ideal for cooking as well as for skin care.

It seems that former explore that supposedly proved that coconut oil caused a rise in cholesterol was based on using hydrogenated coconut oil. As many citizen are now aware, this is a process that produces the "bad fats" or trans fats that are the cause of so many condition problems. Trans fats in anyone raise the Ldl or bad cholesterol to go up. Pure coconut oil, however, has no such effects - just the opposite.

One of the major benefits of coconut oil is that it contains lauric acid, which is a natural enemy of many harmful microorganisms and Possibly even cancer cells. Lauric acid helps protect the body against bacteria, fungi and viruses, so it has many wholesome qualities.

Coconut Products and Weight Loss

If you're trying to lose weight, which coconut products should you consume? The short acknowledge is, "all of them!" This doesn't mean, however, that you have to go overboard and drink or eat coconut products from dawn till dusk. Even though coconut milk and oil both comprise wholesome fats, if you're trying to cut back on fat you obviously don't want to overdo it with any kind of fat.

You can use all of the products in moderation and gain the benefits. This is true for everyone, whether you want to lose weight, gain weight or vocalize your current weight. You can drink coconut water as a sports drink, or just when you want a refreshing cold drink. Don't drink it in place of quarterly water, though. Pure H20 should still be your traditional beverage of choice!

Coconut milk is probably the best milk substitute if you're vegan or lactose intolerant. Even if you do eat dairy, there's no conjecture not to add coconut milk to your diet. You can find many wholesome recipes that use coconut milk, or you can just drink it as a refreshing beverage that's a bit more huge than coconut water.

Coconut oil is ideal for cooking. This is one big edge it has over the other super wholesome oil - olive oil. I'd never advise giving up olive oil, as this is not only yummy but it's one of the healthiest "good fat" foods you can consume. However, olive oil is not good for cooking, as it loses its benefits and assuredly becomes toxic. So, if you want a uncomplicated formula, consume olive oil raw and coconut oil for cooking (though coconut oil is also fine uncooked).

Coconut oil also has many other benefits, and it can be used as a moisturizer and even in your hair. You can find many products on the market that comprise coconut oil, but very often it's safer to just use it level up. Many products, even those sold in condition food stores and online from condition and nutrition companies comprise all kinds of conjecture ingredients.

Do your explore - the Dr. Mercola website has a lot of good information on the dangers of many supposedly wholesome and natural skin care products, shampoos and so forth. With plain coconut oil, you don't have any such worries! You can't assuredly use pure coconut oil as a shampoo, but you can use it in your hair as a conditioner and then wash it out with a gentle and preferably organic shampoo.

In conclusion, more benefits of coconut-derived products are being discovered all the time. Of course, the native peoples of regions where coconuts grow - many tropical regions from Africa to the South Pacific- have long known how healthy, as well as yummy this fruit is. Now, however, contemporary civilization is ultimately catching up. So, coconut water, coconut milk, coconut oil - and just plain coconuts of course- are all foods you can eat with pleasure and without guilt!

The Beauty of One Ingredient: Coconut Water
Vita Coco is about hydration, and hydration is important no matter what you do. So while other beverages claim to be the before-, during-, and after-sports hydrator, Vita Coco is the hydrator made without added sugars, artificial sweeteners, or pick-me-ups.

In fact, the beauty of Vita Coco is that it's made with 100% pure coconut water from young, green Brazilian coconuts.

The coconuts that are used to make Vita Coco drinks are young, green coconuts -- each one cracked by hand -- from northern Brazil that have an average age of about seven months, which is the best age to extract coconut water because it's still fat-free.

Sure, you may not be a marathon runner, a football player or Tour de France winner, but your every day life is hectic enough--you should be hydrated while you live it. Go ahead, get hydrated and remember that life is a sport!

Loaded with the five essential electrolytes that your body craves -- including potassium, sodium, magnesium, calcium and phosphorous -- Vita Coco has what it takes to keep you hydrated and refreshed throughout your busy day.

In fact, each serving of Vita Coco has more electrolytes and 15 times more potassium than the leading sports drink, and more potassium than two bananas (about 700 mg of potassium is in each 11.2-ounce serving size). These electrolytes work to keep the body cool, help boost poor circulation, replenish your body's fluids after exercising, and aid in the detoxification process while boosting your immune system.

This cholesterol- free, fat- free and pucker-free drink can also help soothe an upset stomach, and when paired with a healthy diet, it can even promote weight loss. All this from a single, natural ingredient, and without any artificial sweeteners or added sugars.

11.2-Ounce Tetra Pak with Peel-Away Opening
The perfect solution for an on-the-go lifestyle, the 11.2-ounce Tetra Paks give you just the right amount of Vita Coco to get you through your next task. A convenient peel-away opening makes it easier than ever to access the great taste and benefits of Vita Coco wherever you go.

What's in the Box
Pack of 12 11.2-ounce Tetra Paks of pure coconut water (134 Total Ounces).

The Vita Coco Story
One evening in a Manhattan bar in February 2003, childhood friends, Ira Liran and Michael Kirban, were speaking with a couple of girls they had just met from Brazil. When asked what they missed most about their country, one of the girls, without hesitation, answered "agua de coco." Coconut water, she explained, is the most nutritious and delicious drink in the world.

The rest, as they say, is history. Two years later, the two successfully brought Vita Coco to market in a handful of stores along the East Coast. Since that fateful night in Soho in 2003, Vita Coco has not only carved a new market in the non-carbonated beverage business and redefined the alternative sports beverage category, but has also created the one of the fastest growing lifestyle beverages in North America. Now available in over 10,000 retail stores nationally, Vita Coco is a major beverage brand with a cult-like brand loyalty.

From simple sugar-raised doughnuts to expound cakes, there's all the time a sweet Filipino food that's sure to satisfy that sweet tooth.

But one sweetmeat that deserves a mention is the Filipino pastry. Although not as popular as our kakanin or rice cakes, Filipino pastries are a steady popular in many regions. They're also a great start if you want to bake your own Filipino desserts recipes. They don't require as much concentration as kakanin, but they give you just the same sweetness. Here are some of the most popular pastries in Filipino cuisine, plus some recipes to help you get started.

Buko Pie

Pastries in Filipino Cuisine

It's hardly surprising that one of our popular desserts comes from our top fruit export. Covering the country, buko pie is sold in pre-packed frozen slices, so we're lucky to get it here fresh and hot, not to mention cheap. It is a popular pasalubong for people who go south of Luzon, particularly to Laguna, Quezon, and Batangas. The filling is made from young coconut flesh mixed with macapuno, coconut milk, cream, and sometimes caramel. Most bakeries carry a cheaper version of the pie made from sweetened coconut juice and flour. If you feel like production your own, here's an easy formula you can try.

Buko Pie

Ingredients:

2 c all-purpose flour

2/3 c shortening

1 egg yolk

¼ c cold water

1 tsp salt

1 tsp vinegar

4 c shredded coconut meat

300ml condensed milk

2/3 c cornstarch

1 c coconut water

Procedure: Preheat your oven to about 435oF. In a bowl, couple the salt and flour and cut in the shortening until they form pea-sized pieces. In a separate bowl, mix the egg yolk, water and vinegar, then add to the flour mixture. Mix until the dough is soft and pliable. Split the dough into two balls, one part a bit bigger. Roll out the bigger dough until it's slightly bigger than your pie plate. Fit into the plate and let hang over the sides. Roll out the smaller dough, then set aside.
In a saucepan, couple the remaining ingredients and cook until thick. Let it cook for about 15 minutes, then pour into the crust. Cover with the smaller dough, seal the edges, and bake for about one hour.

Boat tarts

For a quick, cheap sugar fix, boat tarts are your best option. These are small, open pastries with a filling of caramel, langka (jackfruit), mango, or some other sweetened fruit. You can find them pre-packed in most groceries and cafeterias. They are a popular sweetmeat for school lunches, generally because they are fairly cheap and go well with most Filipino food recipes. If you can pull off a simple cake, boat tarts shouldn't be a problem.

Pili Nut Tarts

Ingredients:

1 kg all-purpose flour

½ kg ground pili nuts

1 cup butter

1 cup sugar

1 cup condensed milk

1 cup ice water

Procedure: Mix the flour and sugar, and cut in the butter until they form small pea-sized balls. Gently add in the water, stirring along the sides to help the dough hold together. Form the dough into small balls, then roll out about 1/8 inch thick. Press into tart molds and prick the sides and base with a fork. Bake the dough for about 20 minutes. Meanwhile, mix the condensed milk, sugar, and ground nuts. Pour into the baked crusts and top with pili slices. Return to the oven and bake until the filling turns golden brown.

Macaroons

Filipino macaroons are made with coconut shavings, which make them chewier than flour-based American ones. It's of course one of the easiest Filipino cooking recipes, so it's a great starter formula for beginners. This one puts an unusual twist on the basic recipe.

Pandan Macaroons

Ingredients :

1 cup desiccated coconut

½ cup coconut cream powder

1 tsp pandan extract

¼ cup melted butter

1 ¼ cup sugar

¼ cup bread crumbs

3 eggs, separated

1 ¼ cup warm water

green food color

salt to taste

Beat egg whites until they get foamy, then beat in the yolks. couple the bread crumbs, desiccated coconut, sugar, salt, and butter. Add in the egg mixture, dissolved coconut cream, food color, and pandan extract. Mix well and pour into the pan. Spread evenly and shake down to compact the batter.
